From Legacy to Leadership: How Malaysian Brokers Can Win in the Next Decade of Capital Markets

Video Transcript

Malaysia’s capital markets have reached a record RM4.2 trillion in 2024. That’s up from RM3.8 trillion just last year.

The Islamic capital market alone now stands at RM2.63 trillion, growing 8.5% year-on-year and making up a major share of the country’s financial landscape.

But with this growth comes new challenges for brokers. In 2024, there were 55 IPOs raising RM7.42 billion, and average daily trading value has settled at RM3.44 billion—higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Retail investor participation, which peaked at 34% during the pandemic, has now normalised to 22%, shifting the balance back to institutions.

The demand for Shariah-compliant investing remains strong, with 79% of Bursa-listed securities meeting Shariah criteria.

Yet, brokers are under pressure from rising client expectations, regulatory changes, and fee competition from digital-first rivals.

The way forward?

Automation and cloud-based solutions. By modernising post-trade processes, brokers can cut operating costs by up to 30 percent and achieve over 90% straight-through processing.

The next decade belongs to those who transform legacy systems into platforms for growth, efficiency, and leadership.

Malaysia’s capital markets have entered a new era, reaching a record RM4.2 trillion in 2024, driven by strong equity capitalisation, robust sukuk issuance, and the world’s most advanced Islamic finance ecosystem. For brokers, this growth brings immense opportunity—alongside rising complexity from e-invoicing requirements, fee compression, digital-first competitors, and shifting investor expectations.

This whitepaper by our Chief Commercial Officer, Gaurav Mehta, written in continuation to the presentation he delivered at the Bursa Stockbrokers E-system Day on 15th August 2025, presents a blueprint for Malaysian brokers to modernise operations and turn these challenges into a competitive edge. It explores:

  • Market evolution – the surge in Islamic assets, IPO momentum, and shifting retail vs. institutional participation.
  • Key operational challenges – regulatory change, legacy post-trade systems, margin pressure, and corporate actions complexity.
  • The automation advantage – how robotic process automation (RPA), workflow orchestration, and cloud-first strategies can cut costs by 20–30%, raise straight-through processing (STP) rates above 90%, and boost resilience.
  • Strategic growth levers – Shariah-compliant investing, fractional trading, and automation-led post-trade transformation.
  • An actionable 180-day roadmap – from quick wins in e-invoicing and reconciliations to full-scale post-trade orchestration and client transparency.

Backed by industry benchmarks and real-world outcomes, this report offers a clear path for brokers to thrive in Malaysia’s next decade of capital markets growth.
